For decades, college athletes played under rigid rules prohibiting monetization. No sponsorships. No merch. In general, no agreements that could bring in money using their name, image, or likeness (NIL).

In 2021, everything changed. The NCAA lifted its restrictions on student athlete NIL monetization opportunities, and a new playing field opened—not just athletically, but online.

Today’s rising stars aren’t waiting for a professional contract to build their personal brands. They’re launching businesses, signing deals, collaborating with major brands, and setting new standards for how athletes show up online.

HOW NIL INFLUENCE IS PLAYING OUT

Not every NIL athlete is building their brand the same way. Some lead with pure talent. Others lead with charisma. Most are somewhere in between, building communities, audiences, and opportunities on their own timelines.
